Having to say goodbye to a loved one is never easy. It’s complicated to be able to figure out what words to use to be able to express your emotions correctly, let alone gracefully. Peter DeMarco, though, had no problem penning a passionate and heartbreaking letter to his late wife, Laura Levis. In this letter, he thanks his friends and all of the hospital staff who cared for her after she suffered an extreme asthma attack that took her life.

“To all of you who love the most lovely person in this world, Laura Levis, who is my wife, my best friend, and my soulmate forever,” he began.

He then tells how he put out the word to all of their family and friends that Laura was in the hospital and needed support, but he never thought they would receive the response that they did.

Their guests filled up all the waiting rooms in the ICU, sharing cider and nachos and sharing stories and hugs among one another.

“One by one, you sat with Laura, her hospital room covered with photos of our lives, including our beautiful Bar Harbor wedding two summers ago, as well as favorite dresses, lifting trophies, her trusty backpack, and stuffed animals,” he explains to their loved ones.

“Holding her hand, you told her how much you loved her, how much you were inspired by her, how beautiful (and sexy as hell) she was, how hip and funny and whip-smart she was, and how much of a fighter she was – the strongest woman any of us have ever met.”

DeMarco explained how each of their loved ones went up to Laura and bargained with her to make it through this.

“Laura heard and felt every word, that I know, if not with her ears, than in her beautiful soul,” DeMarco said. Despite the very moving show of love, Laura did not make it through the night. However, DeMarco’s letter shows that he realizes how much the two of them were loved.

It is so heartbreaking, yet beautiful, to see how much a person can be loved once those emotions are put into words.
