9-Year-Old Girls Uses Her Birthday Money To Buy Lunch For Detroit Police Officers

As a kid, nothing is more sacred than the money that you get for your birthday. Without a job, it means that having money of their very own is an entirely precious thing, and they put a lot of thought into exactly what they want to spend it on.

A 9-year-old girl in Detroit knew exactly what she wanted to do with the money that she had received for her last birthday. After seeing the news coverage of the Dallas police shooting on TV, Samya McLaughlin knew that she wanted to do something to support her local police officers. She decided to use her own personal money to buy them lunch, and hand deliver it to the station nearest to her.

“I was thinking that I should feed the officers because I wanted to show them that I support them and I thank them for all that they do,” the youngster said. “I wanted to show them that all lives matter.”

She brought each of the officers at the city’s 11th Precinct a bagged lunch that included a sandwich, some fruit, a cookie, and chips. To show their appreciation in return, the officers pinned her with a special badge and gave her an “Officer of the Day” certificate, and the excitement of Samya’s face cannot be paralleled.

Photos of the interaction with her local police force have since gone viral, and the public is loving the display of affection.

“It’s a small gesture but more of that is needed between police and it’s local citizens. Such a sweet and thoughtful young person to think of this on her birthday. Wow!” commented Shane Shepherd.

Samya spent the remainder of her money on more than 30 bagged up meals that she later handed out to the homeless.
